Familiarizing Myself with Tools and Services
After familiarizing myself with some of the tools we will be using in the second half of the class, I have a much better understanding of how to use these tools. Although, I am fairly comfortable using Google Docs and Google Maps, I found the tutorials very helpful. I had no idea users could do so much on these programs. I find Zotero to be the least intuitive of the programs and spent some time further acquainting myself with it.

Evaluation of My Computer Security Practices
After reading the articles assigned for this week, it has come to my attention that I exercise terrible computer security practices. I had no idea it was so dangerous to use the same password over and over again but it totally makes sense to me now that I think about it. I always try to use a combination of numbers along with uppercase and lowercase letters when creating a password. However, I had never considered the fact that most people probably put capital letters at the beginning of a password and numbers at the end.
The article by Mat Honan reassured me that there is some level of refuge in the iCloud. Though I do plan to use the computer security practice tips I have read about nonetheless. I will start backing up my computer and cellphone regularly. I plan to generate an original password for each account I create, especially the ones containing sensitive information. When I craft these passwords I am going to break my habit of using a capital letter at the beginning of the password and a number sequence at the end. Instead, I will attempt to construct passwords of a higher complexity.

Ethics and Legality of Teachers Pay Teachers
The site, Teachers Pay Teachers, appears to observe the ethical standards and legality of copyright law. At first glance, I was skeptical of the site due to it claiming to be an online marketplace the enables teachers to purchase and sell original downloadable educational materials. However, upon further exploration of the “About us” page, I learned that users express themselves originally in their products and never use media they aren’t sure they have the right to use. The site also provides an extensive explanation of the copyright policy it has adopted in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other applicable laws. Teachers Pay Teachers blocks access to or removes materials that are believed to be infringing upon a copyrighted work. The site has designated an agent to handle copyright infringement claims and provides the agent’s contact information as well as an outline of copyright policy. In concluding my evaluation, I ran the site URL through the Whois.com Lookup. The results generated by my lookup seem to only further support the authenticity of this site. These results can be viewed below.

Jane Browning Evaluation
Jane Brown’s sources seem to be reliable. It was evident from reading her blog that she had researched her topic prior to seeking out sources. Jane began her project with a large amount of information and narrowed down her research as she continued to work.

Research Questions: How have technological advancements affected the dynamics of communication?
As a nanny I constantly strive to communicate more effectively with the children I watch and often observe new communication behaviors that seem to be linked to the digital age. There is only a ten-year variance between the times they are growing up in and the times I grew up in but the differences are utterly fascinating. Children today, are using technology more than any other generation before. In a world of eBooks, iTunes, search engines and cellphones the way kids communicate, relate and interact with one another is undeniably evolving.
As I began researching the connection between technological advancement and the changing dynamics of communication, I discovered that educators have high hopes for implementing technology as a learning tool especially in the field of science. I also found that technological innovations are increasing standards of living in some ways but lowering standards of living in others. There is a disconnection between human values and the values of technology. Human values are shaped primarily by human memories, while the values of technological advancements are shaped largely by possibilities. This could lead to issues in the future as technology continues to engulf humanity.

January 27, 2013-The Digital Landscape
Hi everyone,
I am a sophomore student at George Mason University. I am majoring in Communications with a concentration in Interpersonal and Organizational Communications and a double minor in Early Childhood Education and Business. I am a nanny for a wonderful family just a few minutes down the road from Mason. I am a loving, compassionate, and enthusiastic individual. I enjoy spending time at church activities, doing service, and helping with missionary work. I strive to live a life that strengthens my family and edifies my friends. I love working with children and plan to pursue a career in early elementary education.
I found the article written by Stewart Brand absolutely fascinating. I had no idea there were so many misconceptions about the beginning of the internet. Three topics I might be interested in researching throughout the semester include: the influence of technology on education, the influence of technology on interpersonal communication and the potential implications of the internet on the future.
I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend! I look forward to seeing everyone in class tomorrow!
Best regards,
-Sarah Farson
